Why would you want a Revloution R4 Card? Free Games, lot of them.

So what do you get?

Catridge, CD, USB KEY

Basically the R4 is a catridge, which has a slot for a memory card (which can store games on it. Also in the package, you’ll get a USB Key which has a MicroSD slot in it, this is for the moving the games from your PC onto the MicroSD card. Once you have copied the games up onto the MicroSD you pull it out and whack it into your Cartridge.

Version 3 can install up to a 32GB Micro SD card into it. I won’t tell you how to get the games, that’s up to “youtube” – please continue reading the post for hints though!

The pain I had with this card was that there were no muppet instructions for me! I sat that a few days before Christmas staring at a ‘Loading’ Screen. After a few hours I sussed out that you had to copy the ‘English 3.04′folder contents from the supplied CD to the root of the MicroSD card.

So you end up with the following files in the root, example H:\

H:\ _system_

H:\ moonshl

H\:_DS_MSHL.NDS

H:\_R4__III.DAT

H:\_DS_MENU.DAT

Create yourself a Games folder in the root and drop any game with a .nds extension into this folder and happy days! I handed the card plus a few hundred files over to a friend who treated his kid to a fully loaded DS christmas.

Example mariokart.nds copy this to H:\Games.

Put the Catridge with MicroSD card into your DS and power on. Tap the pacman icon and use the up down arrows to select games, then the .nds file you want to play and press A to create a .sav file (save file) this basically remembers your settings for the game you are playing and creates save points.

What Tools do I Need?

Well, when you download a file from a newsgroup, the nice uploaders are usually quite helpful and provide RAR files and PAR  files, what the heck are they – well RAR is like zipped files and PAR is the repair file in case the uploaded RAR files got corrupted. There are .NZB and .SFV but we won’t worry about those yet. Get WINRAR and QuickPar – both free and will help you get cracking. Grabit does have a built-in extract and check facility, but I swear by having these 2 tools as backups, in case Grabit doesn’t do the business.

Q, Well where do you get the content then?

Good question, glad you asked. http://binsearch.info/ try typing in heroes as an example! Look for a big post something with par files and rar files. Tick the little box and go back up to the top of the page and hit Create NZB.

Q. Great, done that, what do I do with the NZB file?

Save it to your desktop, in case you need it again, suffer a power outage or want to download it later. Open it, which should then force Grabit to open and ask if you want to download it. Once the files download you should be able to browse to your download folder you specified earlier.

I’ve got an external USB drive with a Samsung F1 750GB drive installed and guess what it had a power spike to it and decided that a bad block would be placed conveniently in the middle of one of the 4 partitions I had setup on it! So after reading and googling I found a simple fix which I couldn’t believe after going around the houses. Yup our friend CHKDSK /R!

This built-in utility scanned my drive, found the bad sector clunked for a few minutes and then sorted it. I had wasted hours trying to use expensive programs like Spinrite 6 and backup utilities like Easy Recovery Professional and Recover My Files, which all stopped when they hit the bad sector.

So there you have it, open a command prompt and type CHKDSK /R against your drive letter – so mine was the d:\ so I entered CHKDSK D: /R
